Shaklee Distributor in Dallas warns of holiday weight gain.

Shaklee Distributor in Dallas warns of holiday weight gain.

The holidays are coming quickly and so are the plans for all the parties and meals.  So much of our social time centers around food and much of it is comfort food that is most often laden with fat and empty calories.

How we begin to think about and plan for the upcoming holidays is very important.  Is our focus more on the food than the actual close connections we make with people?  Do we spend more time planning what we are going to wear than how our eating habits come across?

It is a good idea to think ahead before giving or going to one of these gatherings.  After all good impressions are important and can deepen relationships.  Here are a few tips you have probably heard about or read before, but now is the time for a review:

Don’t go hungry.  Eat something before you go. A  protein shake will keep you satisfied for a longer period of time and you won’t be tempted to eat things you normally will avoid.  And by all means, do NOT skip meals so you can eat a lot at this event. Smart snacking during the day will keep your spirits up and your vulnerability at bay.

Drink water.  Water helps to keep the body hydrated well when thirst can be mistaken for hunger.  Often at parties, one feels the need to have a drink in hand.  Holding a glass of water with a lemon or lime slice in it can occupy your hands just as well as a high carbohydrate drink.

Concentrate on others.  Getting involved in what is going on with someone else will keep your mind off your nervousness or perceived hunger.  They will appreciate the attention, too.

These small “corrections” to your planning will take you into and through the holidays with a few tools that will keep you on track for better health come January 2.

Shaklee Distributor in Dallas gives lessons in speed eating.

Shaklee Distributor in Dallas gives lessons in speed eating.
Many of us are living a fast-paced lifestyle. We do most every thing in a hurry, just to get to the next item on our agenda and then race through that as well.
One harmful affect of living in the fast lane is that our pace generally doesn’t slow down for our meals. We grab something quick, gobble it down and move on. This is not beneficial for our digestive system and eventually for our waist line.
When we don’t get out of that “fight or flight” mode for lunch or even dinner, our bodies do not handle food the way they should. Because we are stressed, our “food handling processes” are put on the back burner and are not digesting our food properly. It sits in our stomach longer than it should and we begin to experience heartburn and other symptoms of mal-absorption.

Another problem is that when eating fast, we eat more. Our bodies do not signal our brains that we have had enough until it is too late.
Some things to change are:
1. Do NOT eat in the car.

2. Set a timer and take 20 minutes to eat.

3. Put your fork down between each bite.

4. Sip water between each bite.

5. Eat at a table or designated place.

6. Get up from the table halfway into your meal and then return to it in a few minutes.

Shaklee distributor in Dallas looks at supersize me.

Shaklee distributor in Dallas looks at supersize me.

There is a business man in Indiana who is capitalizing on the American phenomenon of people who eat more than they should.  Now instead of them asking the counter clerk at the local fast food chain restaurant to “supersize that meal”, their relatives are asking the funeral director to supersize their loved one’s casket.  The death of obese persons is often masked as a common disease, but most likely that death was caused by symptoms of being morbidly overweight.

This business man in LYNN, Indiana, a casket maker specializing in oversize caskets, says business is booming along with America’s obesity epidemic.  Because we, as a nation, are growing bigger and bigger, we are requiring larger and larger caskets for burial.   Also, this morbidly obese condition is causing earlier death and is increasing the general mortality rate.

We don’t have to continue this trend.  As individuals, we must take control of our lives, including our eating habits and the emotions that trigger the bad habits.  Avoid the “super size me” conversation at the funeral home by sharing with your loved ones that you want them to be around for a long, healthy time.

The holidays are here.  That means gatherings of friends, family and coworkers. In the United Stages, gatherings typically do not happen without food and drink.  These are two things that seem to pull people together, make them more relaxed and engaging.

Generally, these festive foods are so tasty and we enjoy them so much.  Maybe that should be that we enjoy them too much.  One problem lies with the fare that is often loaded with sugar and fat.  We have heard the stories of sugar plum fairies.  Hosts and hostesses love to put out the prettiest, most decorative sweets to impress their guests. And because they are so enticing and so much effort has been put into them, a proper guest will have to have one. Or two. Or one of everything.

And fats are often abundant also.  Think of all the nice hors d’oeuvres that were cooked in butter, or worse yet oil. Then there is the ranch dip that some eaters think improves on everything.  I have even seen pepperoni pizza dipped in ranch dressing.  Even when raw vegetables are served there is a variety of dressings and dips that are laden with fats.  There is even hidden sugar and sodium in these dips.

Many people will actively plan to overeat and eat erroneously at these frequent parties.  “If I skip breakfast I can eat what I want at the party.”  Often what happens when a meal is skipped is that the missed nutrition and calories are compensated for throughout the day.  It is easier to eat ‘just a little something” in an attempt to stave off the hunger pangs.  That “just a little something” often is not the healthiest choice.  Remember that the plan was to not eat, so the likelihood that healthy snacks are available is very small.  It is usually a trip or two to the vending machine for candy or chips or crackers.  By party time the meal-skipper has eaten many more calories than would have been ingested at breakfast and with much lower nutritional levels.

The solution is to eat a good breakfast and a good lunch.  You will go to the party without that look on your face that no one should be between you and the food tables.  You will be more able to eat responsibly and pursue the actually reason for the gathering:  you will be able to socialize and connect with the other guests.

If you are concerned about getting a good breakfast and lunch in before the party, try a meal replacement shake to get you though the day.  Shaklee Corporation’s Cinch Shakes are a great way to get your protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals for a very low number of calories.
